Main Duties and Responsibilities:

• Prepare and inspect substrates, formwork, granular base, moisture barriers, and steel reinforcement/armatures prior to placement, ensuring proper alignment for custom architectural and sculptural concrete features.
• Assist with and/or perform placement of concrete and shotcrete on vertical, overhead, and irregular surfaces; support safe setup of hoses, nozzles, scaffolding/lifts as required for complex installs.
• Consolidate and shape placed material using screeds, vibrators, floats, and specialty hand tools to achieve required thickness, density, and bond, minimizing rebound, voids, and surface defects.
• Hand-finish and sculpt concrete/shotcrete surfaces using trowels, floats, knives, rasps, grinders, and carving tools to create natural rock textures, stratification, fissures, and custom relief details consistent with design intent.
• Execute detailed finishing while material is green and during cure windows, including edge work, transitions, joints, and blending between pours/sections to maintain a seamless natural appearance.
• Apply curing compounds, hardeners, sealers, and protective coatings suited to the feature’s exposure (freeze/thaw, water exposure, UV), ensuring long-term durability and colour stability.
• Perform waterproofing/damp-proofing as required for water features, retaining/slope applications, and exterior installations to reduce moisture infiltration and weather-related deterioration.
• Install and accurately set anchors, embedded plates, sleeves, brackets, and fixtures in fresh material to support structural attachments and final features.
• Colour and finish sculptural concrete using approved systems (integral colour, pigments, stains, and/or layered coloration) to replicate natural stone variation and achieve Ocean Rock quality standards.
• Repair, resurface, and restore damaged or worn concrete/shotcrete features, matching existing texture and colour through patching, carving, grinding, and finishing techniques.
• Interpret drawings, sketches, reference photos, and site conditions; produce consistent results to specified tolerances while meeting artistic requirements for realism and detail.
• Coordinate closely with project leads and other trades to plan sequencing, protect finished work, maintain a clean site, and ensure each installation meets Ocean Rock Art’s workmanship standards.

Skills Requirements

Education: No Minimum Education Requirement

Work Experience: At least 3 years of verifiable work experience as a concrete finisher (non-labourer) is required

Skills/Licensing: 

• Demonstrated and verifiable skill competency in concrete finishing using hand and power tools (trowels, floats, edgers, grinders) and in achieving consistent surface quality on complex shapes and profiles.
• Verifiable experience with shotcrete application and finishing (wet or dry process), including understanding of rebound management, thickness control, consolidation, and safe hose/nozzle handling.
• Demonstrated ability to create custom textures and sculptural finishes, using carving and finishing tools.
• Demonstrated working knowledge of reinforcement/armature concepts, embed/anchor placement, and pre-pour inspections to ensure structural integrity and correct alignment of custom features.
• Demonstrated proficiency reading and interpreting drawings, grade/spec requirements, and/or design references (sketches, renderings, photos) and converting them into accurate finished work.
• Demonstrated Knowledge of curing practices and knowledge of selecting/applying sealers and protective coatings appropriate to exposure conditions (weather, water, abrasion).
• Working knowledge of waterproofing/damp-proofing methods relevant to exterior features and water-adjacent installations.
